Convincing the Trump Administration to say NO to a trillion-dollar mine

For nearly two decades, a diverse cross-section of local communities in and around Bristol Bay, Alaska have fought against the proposed Pebble Mine, a generational threat to the region’s billion-dollar fishing economy. Lewis has worked with various members of the coalition for more than 13 years across three administrations, serving as a point person media and communications strategy.

Whatever the challenge, the strategy adjusted accordingly to ensure maximum effectiveness. Lewis continues to collaborate with Bristol Bay Native Corporation (BBNC) to ensure its position on this issue is clear while maintaining overall brand integrity — an “all-hands-on-deck” approach requiring constant collaboration and synchronization of activities across multiple firms and departments.

In November of 2020 — surprising many — the Trump Administration denied the key federal permit for the Pebble Mine. In 2023, the Biden Administration finalized a rarely used provision under the Clean Water Act to protect Bristol Bay from Pebble Mine. Though the mine’s backers continue to challenge these decisions in court, Bristol Bay and its people are much safer from the threat of Pebble Mine than they have been in nearly two decades.

“Lewis has been a trusted advisor and partner throughout the decade-plus fight against the Pebble Mine. He is central to ensuring our media strategy aligns with our political and legislative goals, ensuring that BBNC’s message is on-point and delivered to the right audience. BBNC will always be appreciative of his deep commitment and tireless work to protect the world’s largest wild sockeye salmon run.”

Achieving the top legislative goal for America’s National Heritage Areas

The Alliance of National Heritage Areas (ANHA) represents the interests of the country’s National Heritage Areas, federal designations for places that have significant cultural or historical significance to the American experience.

The organization had a unique opportunity to pass legislation that would provide its 50+ members with long term — and certain — federal funding, something that had been elusive throughout their four decades of existence. Yet the bill remained stuck in Congress, with time running out on the legislative calendar.

Lewis worked closely with both the ANHA team and its lobbyist to provide media support and strategy for its efforts on the Hill, while also working with members to combat misinformation that could make bipartisan passage more difficult. As a result, in the waning days of the 117th Congress, the House and Senate passed, and President Biden later signed, the National Heritage Areas Act. The centrality of ANHA in passing the legislation was evident in the press releases from bill sponsors.

Lewis was a valued partner as ANHA sought to pass legislation that was critical to our members’ future. He worked seamlessly with our government affairs team, ensuring our media strategy enhanced our work on the Hill. The success of the effort speaks for itself; in the final days of the 117th Congress, the House and Senate overwhelmingly passed, and President Biden later signed, legislation that provides long-term funding and stability for America’s National Heritage Areas.”

Capturing the right voice for The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development

For over a decade, Lewis worked as a consultant with the 55-year-old National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development to strengthen its mission to provide economic opportunity to Indigenous people, tribes, and organizations across the country.

In addition to directing external communications for the organization and serving as an advisor for its federal agenda, Lewis worked closely with The National Center’s President and CEO to hone his and the organization’s voice in public speaking engagements. These spanned panels, webinars, interviews with elected and administration officials, and keynote addresses, including at the annual 4,600-person Reservation Economic Summit. Lewis’s work entailed both speech writing and speech prep, in advance of and during addresses.

Lewis’s talent and expertise proved invaluable to the organization. But don’t take his word for it…

Lewis did a great job of capturing my voice and effectively communicating the message of The National Center for American Indian Enterprise. Whether it was writing a 15-minute keynote address delivered to an audience of thousands or quick and easy one-liners for small roundtable discussions, there was no assignment too big or too small for Lewis. His versatility, writing chops, and understanding of the issues make him an invaluable partner for any business or organization.”
